Gansu reminds travelers of old Silk Road. Among many historic areas and ancient cities in this province, Dunhuang Grotto is the top attraction with marvelous sculptures and frescoes. There is another famous Grotto nearby, Maijishan. But you can only watch the whole hill and climb along the stairs at Maijishan, visitors are prohibited to get into the caves. The Grottos are located in the north of Gansu with a pretty dry weather, whereas the south part consists of grassland and wetland with Tibetan villages and monasteries.
